"Hi, Jaune Arc here! ...Except that, I'm actually not here right now. Or maybe I am and I just re-discovered decent comic books but I mean, I'm probably not ignoring you. So leave me a message. Unless you were trying to call someone else. Then you should call them. Smiley face." |

What are you--?
[Surely she wasn't going to murder him. She could do that anywhere. He doesn't fully understand until she grabs his hand. Bitterness, resentment that's deeply instilled, an empty sort of sadness, constantly between being completely numb or overwhelmed, compassion that gets him in trouble and the desperate desire to make sure no one else ever has to feel the same way. But other than the confusion, Jaune is starting to feel tired and blank. It's the kind of apathy he considered trying to attain, even if he didn't intentionally let himself get caught by a spirit because that would have been dumb. It hits him harder than he expects and he ends up flopping on his back in the water, not letting go.]

[He isn't sure what emotions belong to him and her anymore. He's been afraid plenty of times, but this is different. He's disgusted with himself and feeling loyalty to Cinder and Mercury that crazy evil waste of life murdered Pyrrha and he helped, but the abandonment issues hit too close to home and he's kind of glad for all that sadism and cruelty because it helps him ignore his own loneliness. Appreciated but never good enough. Always second best at most. No one's first choice. Even Emerald was probably Cinder's first choice. How could she not be? He understands jealousy and anger. But he wants the sadism to stay. He still remembers when he split and that he's capable of that. He kind of envies Emerald for being so okay with it. When do you get to the point where you're so sick of feeling scared and helpless that you don't care anymore? He doesn't care if Emerald doesn't care about him and he doesn't feel like he owes her. He still cares about her and it would feel wrong to just go their separate ways. Right now though, he's just exhausted. That scares him because he's so afraid that once it ends he'll just feel everything without the justified cruelty. It sucks. He keeps his head under the water, staring at the sky, before forcing himself to resurface. It's very difficult. He feels more drained than when he did after their recent battle against the spirits. There's shaking and it's not him.]
No.

We're even now, so let go.
[ One thing Jaune might feel a little later is definitely a small twinge of regret, but it's not at the forefront. Just this little spark that's buried so deep down because she doesn't want to feel it. But it's there, right alongside the fear and anger. ]

It's not about being even, Emerald. You waited a while to do this, so why me?
[He'll only be more convinced that he shouldn't ignore her completely.]

[ Look, from what she heard Jaune was there so she's not worried about that being anything he doesn't know about. As long as she doesn't talk about specifics of anything there's no threat. ]
Because those are the other people I know might listen. [ She pauses. ] You mean Icy and Battler? Icy broke out of prison during the breach and I knew where Battler was for those months you couldn't find him. [ She figures those little tidbits of information ought to at least pique his interest enough to think she has information of value. She finally pushes herself up to stand up out of the water. ] Come on, I want to get this over with.
no subject
[He doesn't want to talk about this.]
Icy? The hot crazy ice-powered villain? No, I meant the alien who tried to take over Nova City and did a terrible job. You knew where Battler was. [He repeats it slowly, trying very hard not to freak out. That sadism and cruelty is still there and he holds onto it. He doesn't move.]

Oh, that guy. Yeah no one was really impressed with him. People who have real power know not to brag about it. [ She holds a hand out to tug him up. ] You seem to keep forgetting I'm not a good person, Jaune. I know a lot of terrible people and about a lot of terrible things I don't tell you about. This particular one is one that I am offering to help a.. "friend" who's terrified because of what these people did in their original world but agreed not to freak out and try to murder them on the spot like he wanted to.

[He almost stumbles into her, yawning into his hand. He says without thinking.] Sometimes I envy that. [He brightens just a little.] So you do have friends. And it's someone you don't hate enough to do a favor for him. Is it the robot?
no subject
[ She's going to shove him ahead then. He can lead the way to somewhere private, so his stuff will get the damp clothes on them. ]
Why do you keep thinking I'm friends with a robot? It's Cassian, and he's not a friend. I said friend like "friend" with quotation marks.
no subject
[Does Emerald want to go to his tent? He walks ahead at first, but stops to walk beside her.]
Why wouldn't you be? That's still basically Emerald for a friend. Cassian is your friend.
no subject
[ Does Jaune need help being a hobo? Because tents are honestly not great. She'll judge him and teach him how to properly find a good squatting building. ]
Mercury is a friend. Cassian is not a friend. Cassian is an acquaintance with steak.
no subject
[He does, Emerald. He needs so much help with it.]
He has steak?

[ She is a jerk, Jaune. ]
He has steak.
