[part of him wishes dave would just walk away. he doesn't need to see this and the longer it goes on the more he hates himself for it. but every time he attempts to calm down, take a breath, he chokes or starts sobbing again and he's back at square one. he's supposed to be stable. or pretend to be. but he's so fucking terrified. he feels a surprisingly strong grip stall his hand and a slight pressure settle over him. it's dave. dave's smiling at him and jaune hates himself for being helpless, again, and relying on everyone else again, but exhaustion takes over making running away impossible. he finds he doesn't want to. he stares at dave for a second longer, his eyes flickering to kitkat when the cat's mentioned. he's taking in his surroundings that feel somewhat more solid and real but still vague and distant, like he's just grasping parts of it, or it's distorted by water, and shifts closer to dave in an attempt to get warmer.

dave is kind and selfless--too selfless about people important to him--and he honestly deserves better. like people who don't constantly hurt him and are capable of keeping their shit together. like jeff. he wants to argue with dave but he also wants to be selfish and he's just so tired. he's tired and broken and sad and right now, dave's right. they're safe.

for now.

he doesn't trust himself to speak yet, so he just stays there, occasional hiccups and hitches in his breath. it's probably been several minutes but it feels like years to him. at least hours. hours and hours. does time pass too slowly for dave? how agonizing is this? his vision keeps blurring and his face is probably ridiculously red. when he does manage to speak, his voice is raw and smaller than it normally is.]

[ he thinks he can help with this - being on the other side of things. it's heartbreaking to watch and awful but he understands. gets how it could happen. it must've freaked the hell out of jeff when he did it. he feels bad for the guy. he probably dealt with it better than dave is right now with jaune.

he gets as close against him as he can and then debates putting an arm around his shoulder. they're not quite at the right tallness level for that so he puts an arm on his back instead and lightly rubs it up and down, occasionally giving it a little pat in between. some solid comfort, hopefully. he leans his head on him after a moment. stays like that for... one of the minutes. he shifts enough to pull the cat over before resuming just sitting there comfortably. not silent because there's a cat purr to fill it. he might've did something else otherwise. ramble and ruin jaune's comfort probably. it feels like forever. ]

Yeah. It doubles as a blanket.

[jaune doesn't notice any of dave's nerves. he's doing better than jaune ever managed to do with weiss. he knows weiss does that breathing thing when he goes somewhere but when he tries he just ends up starting to hyperventilate so he stops trying that. too many numbers too much counting his brain can't keep up. the light pats and rubs are much more grounding. he's still a sad, quivering mess, but he's a somewhat calmer, sad quivering mess. the cat keeps purring and he only moves to pet kitkat, letting dave lean against him, listening to him breathe. slowly mending. this kind of closeness isn't overwhelming or trapping. he wants to be here. it feels secure.]

That's because capes are super awesome.

[ dave's approaching it how he thinks it would work on himself. a mix of how jefferson approached it and how he's ever calmed karkat down. how the mayor would simply sit beside him and lean against him and made everything feel slightly better.

a combination. it seems like it pays off. ]

We should get you one. Even if you don't wear it all the time like me. You can have one of those fancy ones you take off before you do shit. The formal cape.
