[She doesn't have to say Battler's name. The parallels are clear and he's quiet for a moment, trying to absorb the information without, well, reacting. His voice is hoarser when he does speak, and he's obviously trying to stay on the subject in the present.]

I just... It was nice talking to him. He's fun and I want him to be happy, but.. I don't think I can be that person. Not right now. You were right, when you said what you did to the other me. Because we're friends, and neither of us wanted that. I mean, if she offered I'd probably say yes, but I understand why she wouldn't, y'know? We both agreed to those terms and I'm okay with it. It was...really good. And there weren't any complicated emotions to get in the way.

[ Because that's what the "strategic retreat" was all about. Taking a step back so she can figure out how she can figure out how to make her place in this world without him being able to take it from her. ]

I know you aren't. [ Weiss isn't sure she buys that, but she also.. isn't him. So she listens to what he has to say. ] Okay. Just... if you find someone you end up having feelings for- and I'm not saying you will because you know what you need better than I ever could- just promise me you won't turn away from trying because you've decided you don't want forever.

At least now hopefully he's figured out that you're not going to sit quietly and let him when when he has lashed out. But you'll have our support, whether you decide to fight or wait.

[He thinks he understands now, at least on some level, why she waited before. It was just like their first battle.]

[He rolls his eyes, not that she can see it.] If I promise, will you stop pretending that's ever going to happen? [He knows he's being a salty brat and that Weiss is only trying to help. But it just makes him feel more isolated and like a failure than anything. Why can't people just admit that things aren't going to end up okay for everyone? Not everyone gets a happy ending.]

[ It's not so easy as just telling people, even those she trusts. But she doesn't start making excuses for it. ]

If you promise, I will keep my mouth shut and not say anything, though I cannot guarantee that I am in control of judgy expressions. [ Be reasonable, Jaune. If anyone would understand that not everything ends up okay, even if you find that "someone," it's Weiss. ]

I mean, I'm not sure what there is to judge seeing as half the population probably does the exact same thing except they're probably a lot less honest about it and as my friend I thought you were supposed to give me the generic you deserve to be happy Jaune line. And don't get mad about Mercury knowing before you, I didn't tell him and he doesn't really know details. He figured it out on his own.

[ She knows she would be mad if Jaune had told Mercury something like that over her, after all. She knows even if Weiss has come to trust him more, he's not the first person she would come to to talk about something like this. But he recognized something in her from his own experiences, just like she could guess the reason he was able to figure it out when no one else seemed to figure anything besides that he was kind of a jerk. ]

Yeah yeah. [He still sounds kind of of annoyed. He finally opened up to her and is trying to move forward in his own way and was met with doubt. This is why he talks to Emerald about this stuff and not Weiss. He probably shouldn't have said anything to begin with, so the sooner he just keeps pretending, the better.]

[ Sorry, Jaune. Weiss has been through isolation and bitterness and wanting to keep everyone at arm's length. She was a bit young for sex back then, but she has her doubts that shutting yourself off from possibilities just because you believe the situation is bad for whatever reason is a good solution. ]

[He tried reaching out and he was met with rejection and bitterness. He knows he's the one at fault, but he doesn't think he can try again. He's happy for Weiss, but he's also conflicted, and the situation is bad. Not everyone has their sun to support them.
